Scoliosis is a spinal disorder in which spine gets bent in C-shape from the middle portion or in S-shape from one side. However, while the deformity can be traced externally, understanding the formation problem or the deformed shape of spine cannot be done by common persons hence it needs medical supervision and intervention. However, there is one common visible symptom for scoliosis; the patients of this disorder seem to have uneven shoulder or the affected pelvis looks slighted tilted.
There are different reasons behind induction of Scoliosis; howsoever one of these reasons is congenial, it develops at the fetus stage while in mother’s womb.
Neuromuscular scoliosis is seen due to muscle weakness or paralysis due to cerebral palsy, polio, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy. When scoliosis of the spine develops without any identifiable reason, it is called Idiopathic scoliosis. This problem affects more girls than boys.
In post-diagnosis period, scoliosis treatments depend some prime issues like the cause of the disease, the intensity of the disease which are denoted by the curve and location of the deformity, the age of the patient, which means if the patient is in his/her growing age etc. However if it is found that the curve in spine has created less than 20degree curve it is termed as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and in this stage of the said disease, specific scoliosis treatment is not required. The patient of idiopathic scoliosis, in his/her growing period, should be under regular medical supervision, and in every six months’ gap the physical condition of the patient should be thoroughly checked.
Treatment of scoliosis is different with the patients, in the growth period, with 25-30 degree curve on spine; they are recommended to use a brace to slow down the bone deformity. There are different options of braces like Boston Brace, Charleston Brace, Milwaukee Brace, and Wilmington Brace etc. All these braces are different from one another and these braces have slight different appearance from one another. It is solely doctor’s decision to use any of the brace according to the desired level of treatment of scoliosis. With growth the brace needs to get adjusted. However in case neuromuscular or congenial scoliosis, brace treatment is not appropriate at all.
In case the spine curve shows more than 40 degree angle, surgical intervention will be the best to cut down the intensity. Surgery can stop the adversity and further deterioration of the physical condition. While in surgery, it happened with every patient, a rod is used to hold the broken or curved bone; sometimes in post-operative phase wearing brace will help you to cope with intensity of disease.
Those who are suffering from adolescent should get emotional support for natural recovery from scoliosis; mental support works as great supporting treatment of scoliosis.
